In coordinate metrology, the positions of geometric elements (coordinates) are determined and evaluated by different measuring methods. This makes it possible to determine the dimensions of almost any objects or to check their conformity with standard values. A distinction is made between tactile, i.e. contact measuring, and optical methods in coordinate measuring technology. Further criteria for the classification of the respective measuring methods are e.g. measuring accuracy, resolution, measurable geometries and surfaces, measuring speed, maximum and minimum dimensions, robustness against environmental influences as well as the complexity of operation.In order to guarantee international comparability, all coordinate measuring methods are traced back to standards. National authorities exist for this purpose. In Germany this is the Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt. There are many different systems to choose from. In addition to classic tactile coordinate measuring machines, optical and combined tactile/optical devices are increasingly used. For special geometries, special types of devices are available, e.g. shaft or gear measuring devices. Laser trackers are suitable for particularly large geometries. Laser tracers are used for maximum precision, for example in the calibration of classical coordinate measuring machines. Flexible measuring arms are suitable for mobile applications. Coordinate measuring technology is also integrated directly into production plants. Coordinate measurement technology is used in almost all companies that manufacture products with defined geometries. This applies to nanotechnology products as well as to shipbuilding.
