Pressure sensors (also known as pressure cans, pressure load cells or pressure transmitters) differ, apart from the design and the output signal, mainly in the type of reference pressure for pressure measurement: here there are pressure sensors for relative pressure, absolute pressure and differential pressure transducers.
In a pressure sensor for relative pressure, the back of the sensor element is exposed to the air pressure surrounding us. In a typical setup, a small tube leads from the back of the sensor to the plug or through the connection cable. These pressure sensors have the advantage that fluctuations in air pressure are not reflected in a fluctuation of the output signal.
The pressure sensor for absolute pressure has a small chamber on the back of the sensor membrane which is completely evacuated, i.e. the chamber is 0 bar absolute. These pressure sensors show the current air pressure, which is typically between 950 and 1050 mbar, as long as no measuring pressure is present. Changes in air pressure (e.g. due to a rising high or low) therefore lead to a change in the measuring signal without changing the actual pressure value. A special type of absolute pressure sensors are barometers, which measure the ambient air pressure very precisely. A special form of the pressure sensor is the so called sealed gauge version. Here, the reference chamber is sealed tightly at approx. 1000 mbar. These pressure sensors are mainly used for measuring ranges >10 bar. By closing the reference chamber, it is prevented that e.g. aggressive gases can penetrate into the reference chamber and cause corrosion there.
Another special form of pressure sensors are so-called differential pressure sensors or pressure transducers. Here the back of the sensor membrane is mechanically constructed in such a way that it can be used as an independent pressure connection for pressure measurement. A pressure sensor (pressure cell or pressure load cell) in this version thus indicates zero at the same pressure on the input and reference sides. Differential pressure sensors differ substantially in their mechanical construction. Here there are simple designs which, for example, only allow dry gases for the reference side or also high-quality pressure transmitters which allow an overload (even on one side) of more than 200 bar at a small nominal measuring range of 35 mbar.
