In 1971, Hamilton launched a forerunner of today's digital watches. The light display was operated with LEDs, which were enormous power guzzlers. With the Pulsar digital clock, the LEDs lit up for just 1.5 seconds. The successor model Pulsar 2 did not bring any significant improvement either, because after 1 to 2 days the performance of the battery was at the end.First the application of LCD displays brought the breakthrough, because 30,000 times less power was needed, which made the use of the clock possible up to one year. The digital watches were so inexpensive to produce that they were already available for little money. The new situation on the market caused a great deal of trouble for many well-known watch manufacturers, which saw a considerable decline in sales. Some companies have discovered a niche and now produce high-quality wristwatches by hand.The field of digital watches is broad. Next to the watch there is the alarm clock or the wall clock. For seniors with impaired vision, watches have been produced which have particularly large numbers. The people concerned have accepted this offer with gratitude and many households have such a digital watch. The disadvantage is that the time is not visible in the dark. The solution was to briefly activate lighting by pressing a button.
