Drives for linear movements, also called linear drives, are called feeds. They are mainly used in machine tools, handling equipment, forklifts, injection moulding machines, assembly lines and presses. In other words, wherever linear movements are necessary, the feed can be carried out by pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders. Or by electric motors, which generate the transformation from a rotary movement into a linear feed.To convert the rotary movement, for example, you need either a chain or belt drive, which then receives the transport speed via the speed of the driven belt or chain pulley.There are also two other possibilities: The threaded spindle and the rack.For the threaded spindle, the feed is made by a driven nut which is connected to the component or table to be moved. The pitch of the thread and the speed of rotation result in the feed speed.The screw drives are divided into trapezoidal screws and ball screws.Trapezoidal screws are used in vices or simple lathes because they are self-locking due to their high friction.Advantages of the ball screws: Absolutely backlash-free adjustable, low friction and therefore smooth running, even under high load no great flexibility.racks move through rotating gears that engage in the rack.
