A corrugated sheet is a piece of sheet metal which is bent evenly in a corrugated shape. This allows a high load-bearing capacity and stability to be achieved despite the low thickness of the material used. The corrugated iron sheet was invented in 1840 by Carl Ludwig Wesenfeld, who was previously a manufacturer of Barmer, then a Prussian councillor of commerce. The corrugated sheets can be either stretched or cylinder-shaped. They get their wave form by embossing or rolling the sheet. In the meantime, they are produced with an amplitude (i.e. a reduction) of 20 centimeters at a material thickness of 0.5 millimeters. This is a significant increase compared to conventional corrugated sheets. Corrugated sheets are usually used as room-closing elements, for example as roofing. It can also be found on corrugated iron in traffic. The body of the delivery van type H and that of the passenger car 2CV (commonly known as the duck) of the car manufacturer Citroën were made of corrugated iron. Airplanes are also made of this material. For example, the Junkers Ju 52/3m, which is covered with corrugated aluminium sheeting. It was hoped that this would make the vehicles lighter and reduce air resistance.Trapezoidal sheets are a secondary form of corrugated sheets. These have a trapezoidal shape in cross section. They are increasingly replacing the normal corrugated sheets. They are increasingly used in industry as roof, ceiling and wall constructions.
