Compression springs are designed to resist compressive forces and shorten under load. Extension springs store energy and lengthen under tension.

Compression springs compress when a force is applied, storing mechanical energy. Extension springs have loops or hooks and are stretched to store energy, then retract to original length.

Compression springs are used in automotive suspensions and mechanical pens. Extension springs are found in trampolines and garage door mechanisms.

4,781 sizes, all available from stock. In addition to the standard sizes
defined in DIN 2098, it also contains a vast number of intermediate
sizes in wire diameters from 0.1 to 12 mm. The catalogue extension
springs are available in standard steel EN 10270-1 and stainless steel
EN 10270-3-1.4310, usually with a delivery time of five days.

These springs are sometimes referred as tension or pull gas springs. A gas traction spring functions the opposite way of a gas push spring.  In neutral position the piston rod is inside of the cylinder.
These springs are built on a two cylinder principle. Gas is only at one side of the piston. This gas is compressible.
With sufficient external force, by pulling the piston rod out of the cylinder, the gas traction spring will compress the gas into the outer cylinder. The gas in the outer cylinder will reach consequently a higher compression. When the tension force is reduced, this gas will return the piston into its original position.
A gas traction spring can only be used with the rod pointing up.
