So-called tool steels are used to manufacture tools and elements for cutting and forming manufacturing processes. Tool steels are divided into unalloyed and alloyed as well as cold- and hot-work steels and high-speed steels with regard to their composition and intended use. Unalloyed tool steels are carbon steels for simpler tools such as wood carving knives or scrapers. The alloyed tool steels are optimized with chromium, manganese, silicon, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten for their specific application.Hot work steels are alloyed tool steels for a continuous working temperature above 200 degrees Celsius. Cold work steels are used for working temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius. High-speed steels are high-alloy steels which are extremely hard, wear-resistant and temperature-resistant due to their special chemical composition.Important properties of a hot-work steel are high temperature strength, high temperature wear resistance and high temperature toughness. A typical representative of hot-work steel is the material number 1.2343, also called X38CrMoV51 after its composition of alloying elements. This steel is used to produce dies, die casting moulds for light metal processing, forging tools, cylinders and pistons on cold chamber machines and metal extrusion tools.
