The gasoline engine is an internal combustion engine that converts the energy produced during combustion into mechanical power. There are mainly two versions, the two-stroke and four-stroke petrol engine, the latter being by far the most widely used. The name is derived from the number of phases within a period.The four-stroke petrol engine consists of a container, the combustion chamber, two closable openings, the valves, a movable lifting device, the piston, and a spark plug.In the first cycle a valve opens and leaves the combustion mixture consisting of petrol and oxygen into the combustion chamber. After the inlet valve has closed again, in the second cycle the piston starts to move upwards to compress the combustion mixture. The aim is that the subsequent combustion process can release more energy. This combustion takes place in the third cycle when the spark plug ignites the combustion mixture. The energy generated by combustion pushes the piston downwards. This energy, converted into mechanical energy, is transmitted by the piston to the crankshaft, which in turn mechanically transmits the energy until it reaches the wheels, where it is used to propel a vehicle. In the fourth step, the outlet valve opens to remove the resulting smoke.
