Piston engines are drive components that convert the energy of the gas pressure into mechanical work. The required pressure energy can be generated either by a pneumatic system or by the ignition of a gas compressed in the displacement.Generally, a distinction is made between two different types of piston engines: Reciprocating and rotary engines. In the first type of construction, several pistons are displaced one after the other in a controlled manner by the incoming air. The resulting torque is transmitted to a shaft via a connecting rod or a so-called swash plate. In the rotary piston engine, the movable pistons or vanes are mounted in the eccentric rotor. The compressed air generates a torque on the extended pistons.Due to the design an overload is technically impossible. The construction is basically simple and yet very robust. In contrast to the electric motor, for example, speed and torque can be easily controlled. Of course there are also negative effects on the piston engine. The technically indispensable exhaust air flow of the gas or air generates a high background noise level, depending on the current speed. The control and regulation technology for the precise supply of air is also very complex, but due to its positive characteristics, the piston engine is still used in a wide variety of applications. In a differentiated design, elements of the piston engine are also used in typical internal combustion engines. The classic steam engine is also based on a piston engine.
