Carbon components consist of a fibre-plastic composite material in which carbon fibres are present in several layers. These serve as reinforcement in a plastic matrix. During production, care must be taken to avoid contamination such as air bubbles. Carbon components have a very high strength and stiffness in the fibre direction, a typical property of fibre-matrix composites.Carbon components are used when high strength and stiffness are required with relatively low weight of the building material. Examples include vehicle construction, aerospace, or sports equipment such as tennis rackets or fishing rods. In the automotive industry, ultra-hard and ultra-light carbon fiber materials are used in particular. These components are hard as a diamond, but weigh only half as much as comparable steel components and even a third less than a comparable component made of aluminium.The production process for carbon components is very expensive. The so-called CFRP fibres have to be manufactured and arranged in a complex process. Finally, the filling with resin follows. Therefore, the costs for a carbon component are currently six times higher than for a comparable steel component. This is why the building material is mainly used in noble automobiles. It is currently used in the Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Aventador for the bodywork, which in these models is made entirely of carbon.
