Plastic is a class of synthetic materials consisting of macromolecules that exhibit plastic properties and diverse performance, making them widely used in various fields. Depending on their behavior when heated, plastics are divided into thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Thermoplastics soften when heated and harden when cooled; this process can be repeated several times and is suitable for applications that require repeated processing. Common thermoplastics include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polystyrene (PS). Thermosets, on the other hand, undergo chemical cross-linking when heated, harden and this process is irreversible. They are mainly used in areas that require high heat resistance and mechanical strength, such as phenolic resins and epoxy resins.
The main properties of plastics include: 1. light weight, with a density of generally 0.9 to 2.3 grams per cubic centimeter, which facilitates transportation and installation; 2. excellent chemical stability, with good resistance to acids, bases and other chemical substances; 3. good electrical insulation properties, making them widely used in the electrical and electronics industry; 4. excellent plasticity, which allows them to be processed into various shapes and sizes through processes such as injection molding and extrusion.
The application areas of plastics are very diverse. In the construction industry, plastics are used to make pipes, doors, windows and flooring. In the automotive industry, plastics are used for body parts, interior fittings and fuel tanks, which reduces vehicle weight and increases fuel efficiency. In the electrical and electronics sector, plastics are used for insulation materials, housings and connectors to ensure the safety and reliability of products. Plastics are also widely used in the fields of medicine, packaging and everyday objects.
However, the widespread use of plastics has also brought with it environmental problems, particularly in relation to the disposal and degradation of plastic waste. Therefore, scientists and engineers are working on the development of biodegradable plastics and more efficient recycling technologies to reduce the environmental impact of plastics.
