Polycarbonates (PC) have been used in industry since the 1950s. The different versions of this subgroup of plastics are chemically seen ester compounds. More precisely, they are esters of carbonic acid with bivalent alcohols. Due to their properties, polycarbonates quickly established themselves on the market. They are impact-resistant, hard and weatherproof. They are also characterized by high rigidity at comparatively low weight and are reliable insulators against electrical current. A disadvantage is their relatively high manufacturing costs, which is why cheaper plastics are often used in cheaper end products. These are often softer and less resistant, so that PC is used in a wide range of products despite the increased costs. Without knowing it, almost everyone has ever held a polycarbonate object in their hands: Both CDs and DVDs are made of this plastic. Other applications are the "glazing" of greenhouses and conservatories, the underwater housing of cameras, solar panels or even such everyday objects as camping utensils.Various polycarbonates have been registered as brand names. Examples include Makrolon from Bayer AG and Lexan from the Saudi Arabian manufacturer SABIC.Polycarbonates are thermoplastics from the polyester family. They were discovered relatively late and first produced in the Bayer paint factories in 1953. It is a relatively high-quality material, which is relatively expensive to manufacture, but is still used in numerous products due to its excellent properties such as high transparency, high mechanical strength and good heat resistance. Polycarbonates can be manufactured in all colour shades and can be easily processed using conventional processes for thermoplastics such as deep drawing, welding and gluing.This high-quality plastic has now established itself in the manufacture of many products where high break resistance, scratch resistance, dimensional stability and transparency are particularly important. It is therefore used, among other things, in CDs and DVDs, protective and safety glass in endangered vehicles, in protective covers and housings for machines and also, due to its good insulating properties against current, in electrical engineering for switches and plugs.
