Polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET in short form, is a polymer from the group of polyesters. They are prepared by a polycondensation reaction of the monomers terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, which form a linear macromolecule during the reaction. Since polyethylene terephthalate belongs to the thermoplastics, it becomes soft when heated and can be deformed.Polyethylene terephthalate is processed into plastic bottles using the injection blow-moulding process, the well-known PET bottles are used, for example, as packaging in the food industry. Another important area of application is the production of textile fibres, which are used for clothing and home textiles. In addition, polyethylene terephthalate films with a thickness of a few micrometers are produced. PET films are very light and tensile resistant and are used in a wide variety of applications, for example as electrical insulating films in transformers and electrical machines, photographic film, typewriter tapes, furniture films and embossing foils. The properties of PET films can be modified by changing the manufacturing process and additives. A particularly tear-resistant film can be produced by stretching in different directions, the addition of pigments influences the winding properties, the colour and the UV stability. Coatings with metal, for example with aluminium for the production of rescue blankets, are just as possible as bonding with other foils to form a composite.
