Dampening machines are used for printmaking. Thereby numerous rollers are used, which touch each other. These transport a moistening agent and apply it evenly to a printing plate. It contains mainly water, which in different cases is mixed with alcohol to decrease surface tension, to condition and offset fungicides. These ingredients disable germ formation. The pressure rollers is constantly coated with up to 50 procent alternating rubber. New offset printing machines work with a ceramic roller, which carries very well the particular surface characteristics of the moistening agent mixture. The different designs of such machines can be differentiated. There are lifting dampening machines, which supply the moistening agent intermittently with an oscillating jack. This is an older technique. Nowadays there is the so called  continuous- feed dampening system. With this the moistening agent film is applied by pick-up rollers which have been dipped in a water vat of the particular mixture. This roller is again coated with rubber. Subsequently were the rollers with a ceramic surface introduced. Both rollers are powered seperately. Through changing the rotational speed, the amount of moistening agent on the printing plates is changed. When a dampening form roller transfers only the moistening agent film, then it is referred to as a direct dampening machine. Former versions were referred to as combined dampening form rollers.
