The inking unit is a component of the printing machines. As an ink reservoir, it is regularly supplied by the ink fountain with the aid of the ink lifter. In this way, irregularities or ink fade, i.e. fluctuations in the course of the inking along the printing direction, are counteracted by a constant ink quantity or ink film thickness. Inking units are distinguished by their design: Cylinder, table or plate inking units. Nowadays, the cylinder inking unit is used in principle. However, there are also differences with cylindrical inking units. In newspaper or book printing in particular, offset printing is used in which the ink is transferred via an intermediate carrier.In sheetfed offset printing machines, numerous rollers and additional rider rollers are installed near the printing plates. A siphon inking unit is used to transfer the ink from the ductor (hard roller) to the transfer roller by means of a pivoting siphon. However, so-called web offset presses are used in particular for newspaper printing. Instead of a siphon inking unit, a film inking unit is used to achieve a web speed of up to 15m/s. A film inking unit consists of a film roller and a friction roller. The film roller is positioned at a precisely defined distance from the duct roller. Finally, a bridge roller is used. This ink application roller is directly connected to the printing plate and can either mix the ink directly with the dampening unit or insert the dampening solution into the unit.
