The absence of matter is called vacuum according to the physical principle. To create a vacuum, the air must be removed as completely as possible from the container in question. If only part of the air has been removed and the gas pressure inside is only slightly lower than the atmospheric pressure, this is called negative pressure. Vacuum equipment is used to create and maintain a vacuum. These include pumps, measuring instruments, leak detectors, leak detection systems and vacuum chambers. Other components such as connections, valves and pipelines are subject to special stresses and are manufactured especially for these devices.Properties The tightness of the systems and components is very important. If there is the smallest leak, air immediately flows into the interior of the chambers. In extreme cases this can lead to implosions. Measuring instruments and manipulators are therefore inserted into the interior via special adapters. Pumps of different designs and performance classes are used to generate the vacuum. These can be rotary vane pumps, Roots pumps, diaphragm pumps, turbopumps or screw pumps. Multi-stage designs are needed for high-performance applications. For the generation of high vacuum, backing pumps and heating elements are also used for desorption. Ultra-high vacuum is achieved with the help of liquid helium. Manufacturers use stainless steel or glass as building materials and use seals made of aluminium or polytetrafluoroethylene.Applications Vacuum apparatus are used for research and development, analytics and environmental technology. German manufacturers use the equipment for coating systems, the production of semiconductors, solar cells and DVDs as well as in the automotive industry. Microelectronics and nanotechnology cannot be realized without clean room technology. Otherwise, much too high error rates occur when coating the sensitive components. Contamination management devices fundamentally improve the conditions for the production of semiconductors and pharmaceutical products. Further applications can be found in the processing industry. Vacuum die casting systems used physics to produce ideal castings. For this purpose, the mould cavity and the casting chamber are evacuated in a die casting plant before casting. The resulting underpressure sucks the casting material inwards. So-called cavities - cavities in the casting - are thus avoided. These systems are preferably used in the jewelry and automotive industries.
