A catalyst is used for chemical reactions. It is a substance that accelerates the reaction but remains unchanged after the reaction. Well-known catalysts include Raney nickel, platinum and rhodium. The word catalyst is derived from the Greek "katalysis", which means dissolution. Catalysts have gained great importance in large-scale chemical reaction applications. The use of catalysts can greatly reduce the activation energy, which saves large amounts of energy. In some cases a reaction on an industrial scale is only possible by using a catalyst.One of the first industrial processes made possible with the help of catalysts is the Haber-Bosch process. In this process, hydrogen and nitrogen react in a ratio of one to three to ammonia. Ammonia is mainly used as fertilizer in agriculture. The reaction would not be possible on a large scale without a catalyst. Nevertheless, the reaction pressure is 250-350 bar and the temperature 450-550 degrees Celsius. The catalyst used is α-iron. The process is named after its inventors Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch. Both received a Nobel Prize for their research.
