Exhaust gas catalsyts take care of the exhaust gas treatment in vehicles which powered by combustion engines. Through the catalyst the exhaust emissions are reduced enormously so that the harmfulness of the exhaust fumes is greatly reduced and thus also the fine dust pollution which the vehicle produces. These are also identified as catalytic converters. They mostly consist of different components. Firstof all a temperature robust honeycomg element out of ceramic or a metal carrier. This is traversed with thin duct walls. On the carrier the so called washcoat is located. This is composed of aluminium oxide and has the task of enlarging the surface area. In addition it should consist of oxygen storage components. Through the surface which is roughened in this way a large surface area occurs. In the washcoat active precious metal particles can be found. These are mostly platinum, rhodium and palladium. The carriers are embedded with special pads in a metal casing. This is installed tightly in the vehicle and often also possesses additional connection possibilities.
