Functional principle: A diaphragm pump for pumping gases or liquids. It is characterised by its insensitivity to contamination and can be used in continuous operation without any problems. The principle of delivery is similar to that of a piston pump. Instead of the piston, however, an elastic diaphragm is moved here. However, the medium to be pumped is separated from the actuator by a diaphragm. As a result, all mechanical components of this system are shielded from harmful influences of the corresponding medium. The device can be driven pneumatically, hydraulically, electromagnetically or mechanically. The membrane is moved away from the chamber to suck in the material to be conveyed, thus increasing the internal volume. The resulting negative pressure draws in the medium through the inlet valve. This technique is called self-priming. When the volume of the chamber is reduced again, the pressure inside increases and the medium is pressed through the outlet valve. The membrane can be made of plastic, rubber or other elastic materials. The pressure range is influenced by the size of the chamber, the back pressure to be overcome and the design of the connections at the outlets. For the calculation of the optimum size and power, the corresponding characteristics can be found in the operating manual or on the pages of the manufacturers. Since the actuator is usually driven by an electric motor, this is usually attached to the connecting rod, which is attached to the diaphragm. However, the drive can also be made with compressed air. These actuator variants are usually surrounded by a double housing and then have two diaphragms connected via a connecting rod. These are exposed to compressed air on their inner side and to the pumped medium on their outer side. The connecting rod between the two diaphragms simultaneously actuates a valve which transfers the compressed air to the other diaphragm. This happens as soon as the end position of the respective diaphragm has been reached. An ordinary air diaphragm pump transfers the air pressure in a ratio of 1:1 to the medium to be pumped. This is also referred to as a positive displacement pump, which adjusts the delivery volume by throttling the pressure side and can therefore be adjusted very precisely. Other types of diaphragm pumps are: Double diaphragm pumps - for many applications in the chemical industry Gas diaphragm pumps - for pumping and compressing gases High pressure diaphragm pumps - for operating pressures up to 250 bar piston diaphragm pumps - for pumping aggressive fluids Solenoid operated diaphragm pumps - for process controlled metering of fluids Membrane metering pumps - for metering of highly aggressive and toxic media Rotary diaphragm pump - for low-pulsation delivery of fluids cylinder diaphragm pumps - for evacuating and compressing gases characteristics: Compared to piston pumps, diaphragm pumps are considerably more robust. They can be used for sludge, wastewater from sewage treatment plants and industrial wastewater. The membranes isolate the pumping mechanism from the media. A possible dry run through the generated vacuum does not damage the function. The pumps can be equipped with silencers or pulsation dampers to ensure silent operation. Further advantages are the easy maintenance and the favourable characteristic curve for the performance. Disadvantages are the high energy demand and limits for the generation of high pressure, depending on the drive. Devices with electric drive can be battery-operated in an emergency or run on fuel via a generator. Stocking diesel is safer than stocking petrol. Quiet hand pumps do without petrol engines and electric drives. You can build them yourself with the simplest means. In model making you will find mini-pumps that simulate small ponds, waterfalls or rivers. The miniatures are often produced in-house or modified using standard parts. Fields of application: Domestic waterworks, deep well pumps and irrigation systems are used for water. Submersible pumps in the well or cistern convey service water for the garden and lower the water column in the tanks if necessary. Aerators and filters provide fresh water in the aquarium. This is especially important for breeding facilities and for fish transport in aquaristics. For pond ventilation, the outlets are provided with bubble stones for air. Outlets with air stones in the discus basin prevent excessive turbulence. Heated areas are needed in the terrarium. The efficiency of the plants can be increased by insulating the substrates. Dosing pumps for injections are used in medical technology. Chemically resistant instruments are used in the laboratory for tests in the sciences of chemistry and biology. They can be used for painting in the automotive industry. The equipment for chemicals must not be used for food or as a supply line for the coffee machine. Co2 is automatically added to dispensers. Dispensers can be rented. They are usually made available by the breweries on loan. Spare parts and accessories such as PTO shafts, compressors or chokes can be purchased from the manufacturer or from specialist dealers, so that defective parts can be replaced quickly if the structure can be traced from a drawing. For imports from third countries, a customs tariff number must be indicated.
