A pump is a fluid energy machine that conveys liquids and mixtures of liquids and solids (pastes). For the transport of compressible media such as gases or vapours, only flow machines are used. Pumps are used in private oil tanks, aquariums or garden ponds as well as in large industrial plants. Mode of operation of a pump and types: Among the most frequently used pumps are the positive displacement pumps and the flow pumps. As the name suggests, the positive displacement pump, such as the gear pump, conveys the medium through a self-contained volume and is self-priming due to its ability to build up negative pressure by pumping gaseous media. To prevent the medium from flowing back, these devices have valves or flaps which serve as compressors due to their position between the inlet and piston. One example is the well-known manually operated piston pump for wells, which is still used today for pumping water from a garden well or cistern and works without electricity. The jet pump and its function occupies a special position within the positive displacement pump. With the support of a gas, steam or liquid jet, the medium to be pumped is accelerated. Typical examples are the water jet and steam jet pump. Compared to positive displacement pumps, flow pumps only use fluid-mechanical processes for energy transmission. With this type of pump, which is also known as a centrifugal pump, the existing flow is not hindered by flaps or valves. Since this would cause the medium to flow back when the pump is at a standstill, flow pumps always require a non-return valve to secure it. Unlike a positive displacement pump, a flow pump is not self-priming. This is one reason why the pipes must always be filled with the pumped medium. Alternatively, if the pipes are empty, there must be a correspondingly large volume of liquid in front of the inlet. Typical flow pumps are the fire pumps used in the fire brigade. Flow pumps are suitable for series connection by integrating a special controller. The pump in operation and its characteristics and differences: Manually operated simple positive displacement pumps, which are preferably used for water extraction for garden irrigation, are rather undemanding with regard to maintenance and repair. The only exception is wintering in very cold regions. A roofing and a protected location prevent freezing in this case. In principle, a pump requires little maintenance in the form of repairs or overhauls. Regardless of whether they are intended for continuous operation in oil production or as a submersible pump with integrated pressure switch that serves as monitoring. An important criterion for purchasing, whether used or new, is the characteristic of the pump in order to select the ideal design. It provides information on the flow rate resulting from the flow rate (cubic metres per hour) and the head in metres. The head in particular is an important criterion for water pumps when the groundwater level is correspondingly low. Detailed knowledge of the pump performance of a centrifugal pump is indispensable if it is to be connected in parallel or in series and controlled by monitoring systems. Application areas of the different types: The different pump types are indispensable in private and commercial everyday life. A large selection of spare parts and accessories, such as the union nut or controls required for the connection between pump and pipe, are available from the pump manufacturer and at specialist dealers. In vehicles, a pump supports the circulation of coolant in the air conditioning system, while the circulation pump in the oil heating system, in combination with an overflow valve, distributes heat and optimises consumption. In this case, the overflow valve is used to monitor the feed pump. Circulation pumps for pools or sand filter systems for the pond in the garden ensure oxygen-rich water. The pump in the oil separator is indispensable for controlled disposal after the oil change. For etching circuit boards, the etching bath and an etching unit with a powerful diaphragm pump are required, while powerful glandless pumps are indispensable for solar systems for pumping solar fluid.
