Today we often talk about intelligent weapon systems. But what is a weapon system? Basically, this includes all weapons that consist of several elements, one of which is the actual weapon. This means that during an operation the components of the weapon system function or complement each other.


In ancient times or in the Middle Ages there were preforms of weapon systems such as siege towers. However, modern weapon systems are based in particular on the industrialisation of the 18th and 19th centuries. Here the possibilities were created to combine technical progress with weapons. The two world wars in particular must then be seen as an accelerator of this development. While in World War I mainly the connection between motor skills and weapons to a system (e.g. tank and armored vehicles), the focus in World War II was on sensors, i.e. the location of the opponent and his unnoticed deactivation.


This logic is still used today - albeit in a more modern guise. Usually this happens where the environment is difficult for a person to see and/or the losses must be kept as low as possible.
An example of this are unmanned aircraft that fly remotely and computer-assisted from a neutral location into war zones and can hit and destroy targets there.
