Technical data

The absolute, linear position sensors provided by MTS Sensors rely on the company’s proprietary Temposonics® magnetostrictive technology, which can determine position with a high level of precision and robustness.
Each Temposonics® position sensor consists of a ferromagnetic waveguide, a position magnet, a strain pulse converter and supporting electronics. The magnet, connected to the object in motion in the application, generates a magnetic field at its location on the waveguide. A short current pulse is applied to the waveguide. This creates a momentary radial magnetic field and torsional strain on the waveguide. The momentary interaction of the magnetic fields releases a torsional strain pulse that propagates the length of the waveguide. When the ultrasonic wave reaches the end of the waveguide it is converted into an electrical signal. Since the speed of the ultrasonic wave in the waveguide is precisely known, the time required to receive the return signal can be converted into a linear position measurement with both high accuracy and repeatability.
The Temposonics® technology, based on magnetostriction, does not rely on moving parts and is not exposed to mechanical stress. Therefore, the sensors exhibit considerably longer lifespans and much higher reliability when compared to other technologies, even in harsh working conditions. Furthermore, since the output from sensors with Temposonics® technology corresponds to an absolute position, rather than a relative value, it is not required to recalibrate sensors.

Sensors - Manufacturers, Traders & Suppliers

Sensors
Sensors are the first element in a measurement chain. These can detect certain physical or chemical properties and convert them into an electrical signal for further processing. These can be divided into active and passive sensors.

  • Active sensors do not require their own current source, but generate a voltage that can be measured. One example is the photodiode, which converts visible light into electrical current. Photodiodes are used in dimmers, light barriers and light meters.
  • Passive sensors need a power source to work. For example, a strain gauge changes its resistance value (ohm), which is measured and converted. Strain gauges can be found in scales as force sensors and pressure sensors, among others.
Sensors have become an indispensable signal transmitter in automated processes. In the packaging industry, displacement and position sensors are used for logistically complex conveyor systems. Flow sensors and level sensors are also used in chemical plants, for example. Even in the automotive industry, sensors are indispensable for automotive assemblies.

Sensors for measuring absolute, differential and relative pressures

Sensors for pressure measurement are passive sensors and serve to calculate the stationary pressure, the pressure difference of pressure fluctuations up to the measurement of sound pressure. These sensors determine the pressure via the deformation of an elastic element (membrane). A so-called thin-layer strain gauge is used here. This stretch mark measures a certain resistance value via its deformation. Silicon is mainly used for the change in resistance for measurement in the mbar range. The sensor material has more than 100 times greater measuring accuracy than other materials and has the advantage that this sensor technology can be kept very small. Sensors for overpressure and underpressure are also used in industry. These pressures refer to the relative pressure, which is 1013.25 mbar at sea level, for example. If the pressure is higher than the relative pressure, it is called overpressure (overpressure sensor), and if it is lower, it is called underpressure (underpressure sensor).

Sensors for pressure measurements

Pressure sensors always measure the physical magnitude of the pressure force per area. Among other things, the pressure measuring unit of the force in Newton (N) is specified for the pressure force sensors. The pressure measuring unit of gaseous and liquid fluids is specified in bar or mbar according to DIN 1301. The air pressure is measured in Pascal (Pa). The basic design of all pressure sensors differ for the respective measuring methods in three pressure sensor types. Measuring the absolute pressure (absolute pressure sensor), the pressure difference (differential pressure sensor) and the relative pressure (relative pressure sensor).

Sensors for absolute pressure measurements

absolute pressure sensors are used for reference pressure measurement in comparison to a vacuum of 0 bar. This sensor technology is used, for example, as an air pressure sensor for measuring air pressure in barometers. Furthermore, this sensor is used for barometric height measurement in altimeters. In the food industry these sensors are used as vacuum sensors to control vacuum packaging.

Sensors for differential pressure measurements

differential pressure sensors Measure the pressure difference of two absolute pressures. These sensors consist of two measuring chambers hermetically separated by a diaphragm. This membrane is equipped with a strain gauge. One application example is the flow sensor. This measures the differential pressure of gaseous and liquid media. The differential pressure sensor can also be used as an exhaust gas pressure sensor in automotive assemblies.

Sensors for relative pressure measurements

Relative pressure sensors are used for reference pressure measurement in comparison to atmospheric air pressure. The relative pressure at sea level is 1013.25 mbar and can change depending on altitude and weather conditions. This sensor can be used e.g. as a wheel sensor to check the tire pressure, as the tire pressure in relation to the ambient pressure determines the driving behaviour.

Sensors for high pressure measurement

High pressure sensors are for absolute pressures from 10 to 10.000 bar and therefore belong to the group of absolute pressure sensors. With this passive sensor, the strain gauge (silicon measuring element) is mounted on a metal deformation body (steel membrane). The measuring principle is based on the change in resistance. This sensor technology is used, for example, for high-pressure applications in water steel cutting systems. Furthermore, these sensors are used to control the braking system in motor vehicles.

Sensors for low pressure measurement

Low pressure sensors are passive sensors and are suitable for the use of absolute, differential and relative pressure measurements. The measuring range of these sensors is from 0 to 100 mbar. This sensor technology for PCB mounting has a special silicon measuring cell which is mounted on a complex CMOS chip (sensor chip). In medical technology, such high-precision pressure sensors are used in respirators. Furthermore, these microelectronic low-pressure sensors are used in industry as level indicators, for flow measurement of differential pressures and for filter monitoring.

Sensors for flow measurement

These sensors measure the flow rate of fluids. With this sensor technology, the flow measurement of gases or liquids is carried out using the differential pressure method (differential pressure between two measuring points). These passive sensors differ in two flow measurement methods.

  • For mass flow (mass flow sensors) the mass of the medium flowing through the pipe is calculated in kilograms per second.

  • For volume flow the flow rate is calculated in liters or milliliters per second.
Further on, these sensors can also determine the transit time of the flow velocity without contact with the aid of ultrasonic flow sensors.

Flow sensors

Flow sensors have a wide range of applications. In medical technology, sensors are used to measure the flow rate in infusion pumps or dialysis machines. Furthermore, these sensors are used in automotive components for measuring the gas quantity at the engine. These sensors are also an important component in industrial plant equipment.

Sensors for ultrasonic flow measurement

Ultrasonic flow sensors measure the velocity of fluid media using acoustic waves. With ultrasonic flow measurement, the density, temperature and viscosity can also be determined. This sensor has a transmitter with an opposite receiver. By the arrangement between the two measuring points the transit time difference measurement of the ultrasound is determined. The flow velocity is measured with the aid of particles or air bubbles in the medium. One advantage of these sensors is that they operate without pressure loss in the flow rate. The non-contact design ensures that there is no cross-sectional constriction in the pipe.

Sensors for measuring tensile and compressive forces

The force sensors described here are passive sensors and have a strain gauge that changes its electrical resistance through strain. This sensor technology works on the same principle as the pressure sensor. For this purpose, the strain gauge is additionally connected to a force transducer (spring body). There are many different types of force transducers in force sensors. For example, the design of the force transducers with a bending beam made of spring steel, ring torsion spring, expansion cylinder or diaphragm spring body. These sensors are installed in scales as pressure force sensors or in cranes for monitoring the load capacity as tension force sensors.

Sensors for measuring the compressive force

Pressive force sensors are used e.g. for process monitoring in machine tools during pressing, riveting and punching. These force sensors for measuring the compressive force have a strain gauge with force transducer and therefore belong to the group of passive sensors. Depending on the design and version, these sensors can be used to measure very low or high compressive forces. Furthermore, these sensors have a very wide range of applications in weighing technology. These are used as weight sensors in industrial scales, laboratory balances and truck scales.

Sensors for measuring tensile force

Tensile force sensors are used for measuring tensile stress and tensile strength. Residual voltage used in many areas. Among other things, these sensors are installed in machines with deflection or guide rollers. Furthermore, these sensors are used for measuring rope force in belt tensioners or as overload protection in crane systems. Tension sensors are passive sensors and have a toroidal body with a torsion spring. With the so-called ring torsion spring, the strain gauge is mounted longitudinally on the upper side of the load cell.

Sensors for displacement measurement

These sensors are used for position determination or for measuring distances. These passive sensors determine the change in length between an object and the reference point. Subsequently the signal is transmitted to the control unit.

sensors for displacement measurement

The functionality of displacement sensors is very versatile for the respective individual application. An example would be, for example, a draw-wire sensor for determining a position in conveyor technology. This draw-wire sensor works with a so-called potentiometer sensor which is based on the functional principle of resistance change. Furthermore there are distance sensors which calculate the distance with the help of ultrasound or laser via the transit time measurement.

Position sensors are used among others for position measuring tasks in mechanical engineering. These sensors monitor automated motion sequences, including angular and rotary movements of up to 360°. These sensors are used for quality assurance and monitoring of running processes. Furthermore, this sensor technology is used for precise position measurement as a cable sensor in mobile hydraulics for construction and agricultural machinery.

Sensors to determine a distance

Distance sensors work on the principle of propagation time measurement. With these sensors, the distance of an object to be measured is determined mathematically with the aid of a transmitter and the receiver. Laser sensors, ultrasonic sensors and infrared sensors can be used as transmitters to measure between the object and the reference point. An example of the use of this sensor technology would be for distance measurement in driver assistance systems, here in the parking aid.
