Laser processing with an ultrashort pulse laser is ideal for the generation of microstructured surfaces. Due to the targeted material removal, UKP laser structuring is very precise and does not affect the properties of the surrounding material. Micromachining by laser processing has a high technical and economic potential. The areas of application are manifold: Microstructures can be created by fine machining, so-called functional surfaces, which, in addition to a change in wettability or adhesive properties, also cause friction and wear-minimizing effects. Laser microstructuring has been proven to increase lubricant delivery by up to 25 %, thus greatly reducing mechanical wear. UKP laser structuring literally opens up new standards for the functionalization of surfaces or the structuring of micro-components. Besides these functions, haptically appealing or optically effective structures are used, for example for light scattering, as well as structures with hydrodynamic properties. The use of ultrashort pulsed lasers enables a low-melting and burr-free structuring with high precision in almost all materials, so that no reworking is necessary. Depending on the material and the quantities to be produced, the laser processing is carried out either directly on the component or replicatively during a primary or forming process, such as injection moulding.
