No matter which ship or boat is on our waters, powerful engines bring it forward. By far the most commonly used engines are marine diesel engines. They are available in almost all sizes. In inland waterway vessels or recreational craft, engines are mainly used which are also known from vehicle construction. These are usually in-line diesel engines with four to eight cylinders. However, the kings of marine diesel engines can be found in seagoing ships. Freighters, ferries, cruise ships or supertankers are dependent on engines that have a long service life, work efficiently and incur the lowest possible maintenance costs. The demands on the endurance running properties are very high. These motors are designed for a service life of about 20 years or 150,000 operating hours. Such requirements can be met by the low speeds of approx. 250 revolutions per minute. The currently probably largest ship diesel engine is approx. 14 meters high and 33 meters long. The output can reach up to 100 MW continuous output. These marine diesel engines are also used as emergency power generators for hospitals and data centers.
