A cigarette vending machine is a machine at which a customer can buy cigarettes, usually by inserting coins. Meanwhile, driving licences or identity cards must be used to prove that the minimum age for purchasing cigarettes has been reached. The minimum age in Germany has been 18 for some years now, after being upgraded from 16. All cigarette vending machines without electronic control therefore had to be dismantled or converted in order to meet the protection of minors. The cigarette vending machines are usually located in busy public places such as a train station and near restaurants and discotheques or in the pubs themselves. After coin insertion and proof of identity, the customer can now buy the variety of his choice by entering the relevant number via the keypad or pressing the token directly via touch screen, depending on the machine. Cigarette vending machines have the great advantage that they are available day and night and are not dependent on sales personnel. This saves the operator costs that he can invest in other ways. The disadvantage of course is that no personal customer contact can be established. Furthermore, the customer cannot be attracted with discounts or special promotions. The cigarette vending machine should therefore be conspicuous enough to attract customers and be in as busy a place as possible.
