The term oil is the general description for all fluids that can not be mixed with water. The term oil comes from the latin word oleum, in

ancient greek ἔλαιον meant olive oil.
These are divided between plant oils, animal oils, essential oils and mineral oils. Plant oils are olive oil, sunflower oil, rapseed oil,

linseed oil and safflower oil. They also serve as foodstuff and therefore are also known as edible oils.

Animal oils are for example fish and cod liver oils. They are used for nutrition but are also used like plant oils for industrial purposes such

as for example lubricatinh oil or also in the manufacturing of soap. Essential oils are steam evaders, oily plant or plant parts extracts. A few

have a particular strong and characteristic smell dependent on the plant of origin. These include citric oil and rose oil.

Mineral oil consists of hydrocarbon compounds and is obtained from crude oil or coal. Mineral oils are often basic material for a number of chemical combinations for example for the production of synthetic materials. They are mainly used as energy sources and transformed as fuels and motor fuels. Mineral oils are very important energy sources for society. Heating oil, heavy fuel oil, petrol and diesel are produced from it. It is also used for lubricating purposes.
