For the construction of the most diverse walls, masonry bricks made of various base materials are offered. Normally, masonry is given a final plaster coating. The wall stone used for this is called in the special back wall stone. For unrendered exposed brickwork, weatherproof facing bricks, made of sand-lime brick and brick, are the more suitable material. Conventional walls are constructed with horizontal and vertical mortar joints. Masonry bricks with mortar pockets are ideal for jointless abutment. If the masonry block has a groove, tongue or teeth, no more butt joint mortar is required at all. Masonry bricks with a special accuracy of fit are called plan stones. Thin-bed mortar, similar to tile adhesive and applied with a toothed trowel, is used for bricklaying. The ideal brick should meet different requirements. It must have a higher strength in the pressure-loaded outer walls than in the non-load-bearing partitions. In all heated buildings, the first priority is to ensure that the building materials in question have sufficient insulating properties. In order to optimise thermal insulation, the masonry block is pored and perforated. In contrast to efficient thermal insulation, perfect sound insulation requires particularly heavy and solid bricks. Material examples for the ideal masonry brick are solid bricks and porous bricks, cellular concrete as well as sand-lime brick and expanded clay/pumeston concrete blocks.
