The dovetail connection is best made with a dovetail cutter. For example, this cutter first draws together two boards that should meet at one corner, i.e. the width of the board is transferred to the end of the other board so that you know how deep to cut the dovetails and tines. First the tines are produced. For this purpose, the crack runs around the entire board. On half the width of the torn piece the board is again divided parallel to the cut. Then the width of the wood is divided into five equal parts. At these points of intersection, a kind of template can be applied to mark the tines. There are corner tines, then the gap to be cut out alternately for the swallows and the tines and finally again a corner tine. In order to achieve better accuracy when sawing, both sides are marked beforehand. This facilitates the cutting of the tines. The workpiece is clamped and sawn along the marked lines to the previously marked depth. Then the previously marked parts are lifted out where the swallows are to grip later. To do this, the part is clamped again and exactly at the crack on the brain surface with a suitable chisel. It is first pressed in halfway from one side and then pushed through by the other. Care must be taken to ensure that the chisel is always held vertically, as otherwise it will curvature and the swallow will not fit completely into the chisel or will be chiselled too deeply, resulting in unsightly joints.
