Description

Transmission technology

The product range of transmission technology includes centrifugal clutches and brakes, electromagnetic clutches and brakes as well as the combination with other transmission technology elements to a complete system.

Technical data

Centrifugal clutches and brakes are used when input and output side should be separated during a standstill and the output side should work speed-dependant. Advantages of centrifugal clutches are load-free starting and slip-free torque transmission at operating speed. Centrifugal brakes are often used as emergency braking system. They can lower or slow down loads at a defined speed.

Electromagnetic clutches and brakes
Electromagnetic clutches and brakes from SUCO are notable for straightforward design and ease of installation. Like centrifugal clutches, electromagnetic clutches and brakes can only be used for dry running. Reliable torque transmission without residual torque is guaranteed. Once activated the field coil of the electromagnetic clutch creates a magnetic field using no collector ring. This magnetic field attracts the driven side towards the input drive hub.

Customized solutions
SUCO designs and manufactures individual, customer-specific solutions when standard models cannot be used. Our engineers check enquiries to make sure they are practicable, and, as far as possible, the design of the product complies with the customer’s wishes.

Areas of application

Centrifugal clutches are mainly used as a start up clutch. A centrifugal clutch allows the usage of a smaller motor, because the motor can start load free until it has reached its optimum operating speed, at which the load is smoothly added by the centrifugal clutch.
The main application for centrifugal brakes is limiting the speed of e.g

  • descending weight or persons
  • safety- and fire doors – industrial applications
  • leisure applications – Go Kart to a safe level.

Centrifugal Clutches

Clutches with centrifugal force
Earlier most acceleration clutches found in half automatic passenger cars were centrifugal clutches, which today are used mainly only in two wheeled vehicles. Centrifugal clutches are clutches, which achieve their traction and the resulting power distribution through the use of centrifugal force. Special valves or slides are pulled in the process due to centrifugal force produced by an increasing speed of external power. Through this movement a positive connection occurs in the inner casing of the clutch, through which eventually the engine power distribution and thus the coupling effect takes place. Centrifugal clutches usually work independently and are dependent on the rotational speed, also as the turning moment increases, the clutch grips and pass the moment onto the pinion shaft. When the rotational speed decreasing the power distribution from the clutch to the pinion shaft is interrupted and the clutch disengages. There are two construction methods which the centrifugal clutches are executed with. These are the tangential and the radial construction methods. The tangential method has the advantage of being simple and sturdy. It can however only use a small part of the volume of the inner casing of the clutch for the power transmission. With the radial construction through the use of the entire disc surface an efficiency level of almost 100% can be achieved. Unfortunately this type of construction process disc mechanism it is very sensitive to tilting and has to therefore be accurately manufactured.

Centrifugal clutches can be found for example as kick starters, tickover clutches or also used as friction clutches.

A practical example for a certifugal clutch is a roller with an automatic gearbox. Through the application of gas, the rotational speed is increased, the centrifugal clutch engages and carries the power to the pinion shaft and the roller is driven. When the gas is reduced, the rotational speed decreases, the clutch disengages, the roller slows and can be stopped by braking.
