Direct current is a current that flows only in one direction. The advantage is that the risk of injury is lower for people when they come into contact with an open cable. Electric shock is much more dangerous with alternating current. The disadvantage of direct current is that it cannot be transmitted over longer cable distances. Nevertheless, it has its raison d'être in everyday life and is also used accordingly.Nearly every citizen has ridden a tram, because here the direct current is used. Many small substations, which are distributed throughout the city, supply short sections of the line with direct current. The DC drive is the motor of the tram. The desired direction of travel is selected via a direction switch. By switching off resistors, the motor gets more current and the ride is faster. If the power supply is interrupted, the engine runs idle and the rolling capacity of the tram is used. To brake, the magnetic field is reversed and the motor functions as a generator and the resistors increase their effect. In the past, a lot of heat energy was lost during the braking process, but this was used to heat the railcar during the winter months. Modern light rail vehicles nowadays return braking current to the overhead contact line, so that less fresh electricity has to be fed in. This is an enormous saving in electricity for transport companies.
