Low-maintenance and maintenance-free multilayer plain bearings, also known as composite plain bearings, consist of several materials whose special properties have been optimally combined. These bearings usually consist of 3 layers: a carrier material, an inner layer and a running layer. As a rule, these plain bearings have embedded running layers of PTFE or embedded lubrication surfaces. These bearings are generally more robust against environmental influences such as dirt and dust.

Composite plain bearings, also called multilayer plain bearings, usually consist of 3 layers: the carrier material of steel or bronze, an intermediate layer and a running layer, e.g. of PTFE. Depending on the sliding layer, these bearings are maintenance-free or low-maintenance.
With a maintenance-free sliding layer, multilayer plain bearings / composite plain bearings are suitable for dry running, which is why they are also referred to as dry plain bearings
.

Depending on the running layer, inner layer and carrier material, multilayer plain bearings can be used for a wide range of applications:

• for dry running under difficult conditions
• for dry running under corrosive conditions
• for dry running under difficult corrosive conditions
• for dry running under slightly corrosive conditions
• Applications where the bearings are exposed to acids, alkalis or oxidizing agents
• for grease lubrication
