Apart from rolling bearings, plain bearings are the bearing type most frequently used in mechanical engineering and equipment construction. Where components move relative to each other, plain bearings should guide them as low friction, wear-free and accurate as possible. A lubricating film facilitates sliding.
The plain bearing must be matched with the sliding partner depending on the application, load, speed and materials. Common materials are alloys of copper, tin, zinc and lead, oil-impregnated sintered materials and plastics.
Almost every movement is facilitated by plain bearings. The most important requirements include

Composite plain bearings, also called multilayer plain bearings, usually consist of 3 layers: the carrier material of steel or bronze, an intermediate layer and a running layer, e.g. of PTFE. Depending on the sliding layer, these bearings are maintenance-free or low-maintenance.
With a maintenance-free sliding layer, multilayer plain bearings / composite plain bearings are suitable for dry running, which is why they are also referred to as dry plain bearings
.
