Capacitive inclination sensors consist of 2 chambers designed as capacitors which are filled with an oil as dielectric. As a result of the change in inclination, the viscous oil runs from one chamber of the inclination sensor to the other chamber, thereby creating a change in capacity. Both capacitors are differentially connected. The integrated electronics converts the change in capacitance of the inclination sensor into a voltage signal proportional to the inclination.
In this design, the inclination sensors provide the measuring signal for 1 measuring axis, the measuring range is +/-45 degrees. In a dome-shaped version with 4 capacitors, the inclination sensor can directly provide measured values for 2 measuring axes, but the measuring range of the inclination sensor is reduced to 20 degrees.
ALTHEN uses these inclination sensors and installs the inclination sensors together with amplifier electronics in an aluminium die-cast housing. This results in a flexible inclination measuring system that can be used very well for industrial applications in harsh environments. The amplifier electronics are available as voltage (5 V or 10 V) and current amplifier (0 or 4...20 mA). The scaling can be selected between +/-3 and +/-45 according to customer specifications. By grouping 2 individual inclination sensors over a rigid 90 degree angle, the 1-axis inclination sensor can also be turned into a 2-axis measuring system.
In a special ATEX-approved version, the 1-axis measuring system can also be used as an intrinsically safe version in hazardous areas. Due to the modular design, consisting of inclination sensor and additional electronics, the measuring system is also very well suited to the requirements for use in customer-specific applications.
