Also referred to as p/e converters, are used to convert a specific, adjustable operating pressure into an electric or pneumatic signal. The operating pressure applied to the pressure switch’s connection thread presses against the bottom of an inboard diaphragm. On the top, the force of an adjustable spring is counteracting to the pressure force. The diaphragm will only move upwards, when the medium’s pressure is greater than the opposing spring force and will then activate a little micro switch, which closes the circuit electically or pneumatically. When the applied operating pressure falls back in the amount of the hysteresis (differential reset pressure), the electric or pneumatic switch returns to its neutral position.

There has to be made a difference between electric switches:
- Opener: Upon reachng a preset response pressure, the circuit is opened.
- Closer: Upon reachng a preset response pressure, the circuit is closed.
- Interchanger: By exchanging the terminal allocations at the contacts of the electic switch, both, the opener as well as the closer function, can be enabled.
