Incremental encoders Incremental encoders output a precisely defined number of pulses per revolution. These are a measure of the angle or distance travelled. The coding disk is divided into individual segments that are alternately translucent and opaque. An LED emits a parallel light beam that illuminates the segments of the coding disk. The modulated light is received by photo elements and converted into sinusoidal signals. The signals are amplified by digitizing electronics and converted into square-wave pulses, which are then output via cable drivers. The direction of rotation can be evaluated by means of the phase shift of the two signals A and B, which are offset by 90 degrees. Absolute angle encoders Absolute angle encoders output an absolute coded numerical value for each angular position. This code value is available immediately after switching on. The "absolute" value saves a reference run as it is necessary with the incremental encoder. Absolute angle encoders are used wherever a certain value must be assigned to each angular position and where the detection of the current position is absolutely necessary in the event of a power failure. Single and multiturn Singleturn encoders divide a mechanical revolution (0 to 360 degrees) into a certain number of measuring steps. After one revolution the measured values repeat again. The maximum number of steps is 8192, whereas multiturn encoders not only detect the angular positions but also distinguish between several revolutions.
