In hydroelectric power plants, the kinetic energy of the water is converted into electrical energy. In a reservoir the water is retained up to a certain height. The movement of the draining water generates energy. This is used to drive a turbine. From there, the energy is transferred to a generator, which turns mechanical energy into electricity. The more water passes through the turbine in a certain time, the greater the current that is generated. The flow rate also depends on the height of the power plant's head. That is, to what height the water is dammed up and later flows down from it. A distinction is made between high-pressure power plants with a drop height of more than 250m, medium-pressure power plants at 35-400m and low-pressure power plants with a drop height of about 15m. There are many different types of power plants, from storage power plants and tidal power plants to glacier power plants. They all belong to the renewable energies and are therefore future-oriented. Storage power plants in the flood regions are particularly useful and also future-oriented. Here the water is stored during floods and then discharged in small doses.
