In a solar power plant, solar energy is converted into other forms of energy. Depending on their function, solar thermal systems, photovoltaic systems and solar thermal power plants are distinguished.The solar thermal system is not used to generate electricity, but to generate hot water and space heating. Specially coated collectors capture the heat of the sun's radiation, which in turn heats a liquid pumped through the collector. This heat is fed into a heat accumulator where it is transferred via heat exchangers to the individual tapping points in the house. With a larger heat accumulator, the use of solar heat can also be extended to space heating. In this way, the oil or gas bill can be lower, at least in the transitional period. Furthermore, the emission of pollutants is lower by saving fossil fuels.In photovoltaic systems, electricity is generated directly from the solar energy. This is done by means of very thin semiconductor layers. Within these layers, negative and positive charges are separated so that current can flow through an electrically conductive connection. This is stored or fed into the power grid.In thermal solar power plants, electricity is generated indirectly using solar energy. The sunlight is bundled with mirrors and thus, for example, a special oil is heated with which water is heated. The resulting steam then drives turbines that generate electricity.
