Water treatment serves to improve the quality of water. The treatment can be divided into two groups. The first treatment involves the removal of substances from the water, for example during cleaning, sterilisation, iron removal, softening and desalination. The other treatment includes the addition of substances and the adjustment of water parameters, for example the regulation of pH, conductivity by dissolved ions and other dosages. These processes play an important role in the production of drinking water for humans.The individual treatment processes can be subdivided and titled according to their procedures. The first process is the physical process. The water is purified by using physical phenomena. These include aeration, evaporation, sedimentation, flotation and adsorption. The physical process also includes mechanical treatment forms, such as rakes, screens and filters.The second form is the chemical process. In the membrane process, the biological principle of osmosis is used to treat the water by means of nanofiltration and electrode ionisation.The last process is the biological process. This includes biochemical oxidation, sludge digestion and anaerobic wastewater treatment.An application example for oxidation in water treatment would be the removal of dissolved iron and manganese ions in aeration plants and gravel filters. The oxidized iron and manganese accumulate on the pebbles.
