Water treatment technologies are used for water treatment, changing the water quality. On the one hand, undesirable substances are removed from the water to purify, soften, desalinate or sterilize the water, on the other hand, substances are added to the water, e.g. to reach a certain pH value or to adjust a desired conductivity.There are various water treatment technologies, including physical processes such as sedimentation, flotation or mechanical treatment in the form of sieves or filters, but also chemical processes such as flocculation, oxidation or ion exchange. There are also biological processes, such as sludge digestion and anaerobic wastewater treatment, and membrane processes in the form of nanofiltration, electrode ionization and osmosis.Chlorine, ozone or chlorine dioxide are added to the water during disinfection, but disinfection can also be carried out by UV irradiation or ultrafiltration.Another example is flocculation, where flocculants are added to the water, which discharge the particles present and adjust the pH value, thereby removing fine dirt particles and colloid substances from the water by flocculation and filtration, which is called flocculation filtration.Most water treatment plants use several processes, depending on the type of ingredients, the quality of the raw water and the intended use of the treated water, as drinking or service water.The most important application is certainly drinking water treatment for drinking water supply.
