Data matrix readers enable omni-directional and optoelectronic acquisition of 1D and 2D codes, such as Aztec, DataMatrix or QR codes, which are suitable for automatic error correction when captured. Data matrix readers include not only special stationary and manual readers, but also mobile phones with built-in cameras or readers used in online banking to determine a transaction number (TAN), which can read so-called flicker codes (4d codes).
The special data matrix readers use a light source consisting of one or more LEDs, a lens for adjustment, a camera and a controller with evaluation electronics. The data is output via interfaces such as Rs232, USB, Ethernet or Bluetooth.
As soon as a code to be read is at a certain distance from the data matrix reader, it is briefly illuminated and the reflected light is detected by the optics and recorded by the camera. The image data are then examined by the evaluation contained in the device according to characteristic code patterns. A recognized code can then be oriented and evaluated. The code is then converted back into a readable ASCII format and output via an interface.
The German Federal Railways, for example, uses an Aztec code for its online tickets. 2D codes are also used on magazines, envelopes or parcels. This makes it possible to track a shipment.
