Devices or technical to check the density of a container, an element or a system are referred to as density test engineering.

The classification of methods for leak testing can be distinguished on the basis of the operational area into:

1. Leakage test with leak test device or leak detection with leak detection equipment on installed systems (pipelines, storage, refrigeration systems, vacuum systems ...)

2. Leak testing of components and systems in series production (eg. radiators (elements), gas meters, fuel tank, fuel filters, brake lines, injection pump housing, etc., this list can be extended almost arbitrarily).

A procedural distinction of the leakage test, ie for the detection of leaks can take place in:

- Method with vacuum (vacuum method) and in process with positive pressure (pressure method)
- Method with test gas and with no gas test

In general, with regard to the respective application (requirements, boundary conditions) must be checked very carefully what testing appears most appropriate.
