The steady rest is a device on a lathe. It is used to support and secure long workpieces during turning. The steady rest is used for grinding, turning and milling spindles, axes or shafts. Since these are usually very long and thin and could bend on the lathe during machining. Since very long workpieces can easily oscillate, the use of a steady rest is necessary.There are different types of steady rest, e.g. ring steady rest, C-shaped steady rest, fixed steady rest or rotating steady rest.The rotating steady rest is, as the name suggests, a follower. It is attached to the carriage and thus enables precise turning (precision turning) of e.g. threads (thread turning).Fixed steady rests are available with swivelling, removable or foldable upper part, depending on the area of application.
