Electron Microscopes
Electron microscopes are scientific examination instruments which can analyse the surface or the inside of an object with electrons. In contrast to a conventional light microscope with currently 200 nm, the image resolution is by orders of magnitude higher and is at 0.1 nm, since fast electrons have a considerably smaller wavelength than light. The required electron beam is generated in an electron gun and hits the object to be examined. The images are generated by the reflected electrons or the formed secondary electrons. There are different types of electron microscopes1. Scanning electron microscope (SEM): In scanning electron microscopy, the electron beam is deflected through magnetic electron lenses and thus guided over the material. The object is thus scanned, whereby a corresponding image is created depending on the reflection behavior or ability of the formation of secondary electrons.2. Still image microscope: In still image microscopy, the object is irradiated by a fixed wide electron beam. The image is generated here by the electrons leaving the object using an electron-optical system.3. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM): Here the electron beam is sent through very thin material, whereby the absorbed electrons generate the image.Electron microscopy is used for analysis and structural analysis of materials in tool research, chemistry and biology. For example, researchers have published findings on the proliferation of influenza viruses using electron microscopy in the scientific journal"Science".
