Offset printing describes an indirect process of flat printing in letterpress, newspaper, commercial and packaging printing. This is widespread and is used almost everywhere in the world. This form of printing is the result of stone printing. The system is generally based on the different water absorption capacities of the different substances and materials used. The modern offset technique is a further development of the lithography from 1789, which was invented by Alois Senefelder. Stone plates were used as pressure plates. These were compressed after paper was added to them, usually between two plates. All work steps were carried out manually. The entire process was therefore very time-consuming, especially when using several colours, such as advertising posters. Later, metal plates made of zinc were printed on. However, these could not print on other hard substrates. An elastic rubber cylinder was placed between the two hard printing plates. Indirect flat printing had been created. These processes are still used today in modern offset printing machines.
