Offset dampening solutions are used in offset printing to separate the parts to be printed and the non-printing parts on the printing plate. This consists mainly of water to use the different water absorption capacities of the different material and structure areas on the printing plate. The pH value of the dampening solution is usually between 4.8 and 5.5. The dampening solution usually also contains plate protection agents, which are mixed in before the process. Other ingredients include wetting agent and isopropanol. These have an antimicrobial effect. Gum arabic is usually used as a plate protection agent. Wetting agents and isopropanol reduce the surface tension.
