Extrusion is a forming process in the field of solid forming and, in addition to the processes of rejuvenation and extrusion, belongs to the forming group of compression. The heated material is pressed through a die by means of a punch. The resulting end product has the profile of the die. The process is similar to extrusion. In contrast to this, in extrusion, no finished part is produced, but a semi-finished product for further processing. Furthermore, lubrication is largely dispensed with, as these are not absolutely necessary due to the higher processing temperatures.The extrusion process allows long semi-finished products with a constant profile to be produced quickly and of high quality. Formed parts of up to 20 metres in length are not uncommon in shipbuilding, for example. Furthermore, the process is preferably used in the production of tubes, rods or beams.In the production of steel tubes by extrusion, the material is pressed through a round die with any internal and external diameter. The resulting hollow pipe is often expanded from the inside on the same machines with a piercing mandrel. The pipe is then cut to the desired length.
