Centrifugal separators, also known as cyclones, are used in industrial plants to clean exhaust gases. Centrifugal forces accelerate particles in the gases, separate them from the gas flow and direct them into a collection container. Since very fine particles are only moderately filtered in this process, cyclones are often used together with other processes to form a filter chain.A special variant is the hydrocyclone, which is used to separate suspensions of solid particles contained therein and to separate emulsions. In plastic recycling, they are used to separate heavy and light plastic parts from each other. Due to the robust design of the cyclones, which require little maintenance, they are widely used. They can withstand high temperatures up to 1000 ºC, making them suitable for use in blast furnaces and withstand pressures up to 100 bar, which is why they are also used in steam and nuclear power plants. In analytical technology, cyclones are used for cooling the sample gas. Centrifugal forces are used to separate the condensate from the gas flow. They are also required in dusty environments, for example in mills where there is a risk of dust explosion. Older and bagless vacuum cleaners as well as modern industrial vacuum cleaners also use the cyclone principle.
