A heat pump takes the heat from a reservoir such as air, soil or groundwater at low temperatures and cools the heat source. If the absolute source temperature is above absolute zero of minus 273.15 degrees Celsius, the corresponding source can be extracted, but only along the temperature gradient. The heat pump efficiency, expressed in coefficient of performance, is, however, when the source temperature decreases.A heat pump is technically constructed like a refrigerator. The difference is that in a heat pump the warm side is used for heating. The smaller the required temperature difference within the heat reservoir, for example groundwater at seven degrees Celsius and the flow temperature, the more efficient the application. The flow temperature is the temperature at which the water is fed into a heating circuit. The coefficient of performance of a heat pump decreases with increasing temperature stroke. Most heat pumps are designed for a maximum flow temperature of 60 degrees Celsius.Heat sources for these pumps are humid soil, humid air or water. As soon as the evaporation temperature falls below 0 degrees Celsius, ice is formed on the heat exchange surfaces. The ice forms an insulating layer which makes the heat transfer considerably worse. For this reason, the heat pump that extracts heat from the outside air can only be used efficiently at temperatures just above the freezing point of the water.A heat pump that extracts heat from a 10-meter deep water reservoir can also be operated below the freezing point of water, since ice is significantly lighter than water. It therefore floats on the surface. During heat transfer, energy must be applied, which is referred to as input. The ratio of output, i.e. energy yield to input, is called performance number. Only a coefficient of performance greater than four is described as economic.
