Cola is a caffeine- and carbonated soft drink that has its origin in the pharmaceutical industry. It owes its name to cola nut, an ingredient of cola along with lemon, vanilla, lots of sugar and cinnamon and clove oil. It was invented in the USA, more precisely in Waco, Texas, in 1885 by a pharmacist named Charles Alderton. However, at that time his drink was still called Dr. Pepper. In 1886 another pharmacist, John Stith Pemberton, launched a syrup called Coca-Cola, which was mixed with soda to make a soft drink.Today cola is available from countless companies and under many different names. They are also available without sugar, without caffeine, with cherry, vanilla or lemon flavour or as a mixed drink.From many people, however, caffeine-containing cola is preferred and used as a pick-me-up. Especially students who want to wake up or stay awake before an important job drink an enormous amount of Coke. However, children in particular should avoid consuming too much cola, since the phosphate contained can impair growth on the one hand and it is also damaged by the many sugars in the teeth on the other.
