After dividing and separating the samples, the next step is to embed the sample. The purpose of embedding is to fix a small or irregularly shaped specimen to act around it or to protect sensitive materials, thin layers or coatings during further preparation. Embedding also ensures that the edges of a specimen remain in good condition if the correct material is selected. The embedding of products enables the rational clamping of specimens in specimen holders for further processing: Due to the uniform outer diameter of the embedding material, they can be clamped in standard clamping devices. In hot embedding, the samples are melted into plastic granulate that surrounds the sample pore-free under the influence of heat and high pressure and then solidifies when cooled.
